Update for Ukrainians in UK - extend your stay 18 months

Navigating the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme: A Guide to Applying for a Visa

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to significant displacement, prompting the UK government to introduce the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme. This initiative allows Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members to find safety and refuge in the UK, provided they have a sponsor willing to provide accommodation. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to apply for a visa under this scheme.

Eligibility Criteria

For Applicants: To be eligible, you must be Ukrainian or an immediate family member of a Ukrainian national who has been granted or is applying for permission under the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme. You should have been living in Ukraine on or immediately before January 1, 2022, or be a child born after this date to a Ukrainian national or their immediate family member.

For Sponsors: Sponsors must be British or Irish citizens or have settled status in the UK, meaning they have the right to live in the UK permanently. They must be able to provide suitable accommodation for at least 6 months and pass security and background checks.

Application Process

Online Application:

The application must be made online. Either the sponsor or the applicant can fill out the form, or it can be done collaboratively. It's advisable for both to be available to assist with questions during the process.

Documentation:

Applicants need to provide their identity details (name, address, contact info, date of birth, passport number), and any criminal convictions or past visa issues might affect eligibility.

Biometrics:

Applicants with a valid Ukrainian international passport can use the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to prove identity, potentially avoiding a biometric appointment. However, others might need to book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre to submit fingerprints and a facial photograph.

Post-Application:

Once the application is submitted, the Home Office aims to process it as quickly as possible, though specific timeframes aren't guaranteed. Successful applicants will receive permission to travel to the UK, where they'll be allowed to live, work, study, and access public funds.

What Happens Next?

Travel and Arrival:

Upon arrival in the UK with an approved visa, you'll be allowed to stay initially for up to 18 months.

Support for Settlement:

Ukrainian nationals granted permission under this scheme are provided with various support measures, including financial assistance upon arrival and access to public services.

Extension Options:

Look out for updates on the UK government's website regarding extensions like the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme, which might allow for further stays under certain conditions.

Important Notes:

The scheme does not require payment for the visa application, the immigration health surcharge, or biometric enrolment.

If your initial application is refused due to sponsor eligibility, you can find a new sponsor and reapply.

Always check for the latest updates on the scheme, as policies can change.

Contact Information:

For help with visa applications, you can contact the free helpline at +44 808 164 8810, available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Remember, this helpline can assist with the application process but cannot provide information on individual application statuses.

By understanding these steps and requirements, Ukrainians and their family members can navigate the visa application process under the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme with better ease, finding sanctuary and support in the UK during these challenging times.
